I can’t find any decent photo of 鱿鱼米粉 (loosely translated to “Cuttlefish Mee Hoon”) and the above photo is the nearest thing I can find from the internet.
During my primary school days, after school had finished, my mom would wait for me near the entrance, helped me to pick up my heavy school bag and gave me a dollar to buy anything I want to eat. The reason was, she had to send other kids back first and I was the last batch she sent home. Ya, my mom was “the auntie (driver)” back in the days and I had to squeeze at the front seat with another kid. Not in the most comfortable position but it was really fun.
So, with that extra dollar in my pocket, I’ll either walked to the kedai runcit to buy ice cream, keropok, or some useless stickers. That’s when the old granny’s stall was closed. If old granny (who happens to be my classmate’s grandmother btw, cheerful with curly white hairs and specs) stall was opened, I would buy the cuttlefish meehoon or lemon sarsi / lemon orange / cendol.
It’s my best childhood food. And I bet those who used to study in CHMS KB would say so too. It’s just so simple, boiled meehoon, cuttlefish, cucumber & taugeh (optional) drowned in that thick sweet sauce. You can choose spicy too if you want. 70cents for small one and a dollar for a bigger packet.. if I’m not wrong. That’s like the best food ever, EVER!!!!
Old granny’s stall is no longer operating and I have no idea where she is now. And, there’s no where else selling my favorite 鱿鱼米粉…
Sigh…
